Smart Hiking & Camping Means Bring Your Pepper Spray for Protection Against Mountain Lions, Bears and Cougars.

When you think about dangerous animals in the great outdoors, we worry most about bears. Yes, a bear attack can happen in many areas of the United States. But mountain lions and cougars (since 1970 there has been an average of 14 cougar attacks per year on people) are also a very real threat ...

August 1999 - A woman encountered a cougar near Stonewall Peak in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, California. She used pepper spray on an aggressive cougar and finally repelled it from attacking her and a female friend after a 15-minute ordeal.

Autumn 1997 - A 10-year old boy was attacked and killed by a mountain lion Puma concolor in Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park while on a family hike in July ... "The kid screamed and ran, and the lion did what lions do - it chased him

9 May 2001. A couple with a little boy saw a lion approaching at Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. They threw rocks, but it refused to move away. The husband used his pepper spray

23 April 1994. Barbara Schoener, 40, a long-distance runner in excellent physical shape, was killed by an 80-pound female mountain lion in Northern California.

  Preventing mountain lion
   attacks

Prevent children below the age of 9 from recreating alone or in exclusive groups of children in mountain lion habitat. Most mountain lion attacks have been on children below the age of 9 who were either alone or only in the company of other children
Keep children in sight and preferably in reach. Mountain lions rarely attack a group which includes adults.

Instruct children to fight back if they are attacked by a mountain lion. Even children who fought back were often successful in causing the lion to break off the attack and flee.

Hike with a hiking stick or other aid that can be used as a weapon if necessary. Pepper spray may be an effective deterrent.

Maintain eye contact if you sight a lion. Lions like to attack from ambush and count on the element of surprise. If the lion sees that you have seen it and are facing it, it is less likely to attack

Hold your ground, wave, shout and attempt to look larger (spread your jacket or coat above your head). This will give a lion second thoughts because you are not behaving like prey.

Don't hike or jog alone at dawn and dusk. Lions would prefer lone prey to picking someone out of a group that might be dangerous. Dawn and dusk are particularly active times for lions.

If you see a lion DON'T RUN! Running stimulates the predator reflex and may cause you to be irresistible to a lion.

If you see a lion, don't turn your back. Lions prefer to stalk their prey and attack from behind. Turning your back on a lion invites its further interest.

If you see a lion, don't bend down to pick up sticks or stones. Bending down makes you look more like a prey item. Look as tall as you can and get your weapons without bending over, if possible.

If you see a lion within 100 yards, don't kneel down and rummage through your backpack looking for your camera. Bending down makes you look more like a prey item

Don't say "here kity kitty"
