What's the Scoville Heat scale that measures pepper spray's active ingredient? The Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) scale is an easy to understand graphical representation of actual laboratory test results used in the measurement of the active ingredient in pepper spray known as Oleoresin Capsicum (OC). The results are arranged from highest (best) to lowest (worst) by what is referred to as Total Casaicinoid content or TC. The higher the TC content, the stronger and/or more effective the pepper spray.
How can the Pepper Spray Store guarantee SHU readings?
The Pepper Spray Store & Security Plus is the first non-manufacturer to offer a product guarantee by ensuring that the Securiy Plus pepper spray product you receive meets our stringent minimum requirements for nozzle heat rating. We accomplish this by using only the highest quality raw materials and our OC is laboratory tested for its TC content before blending. This gives us the staring point for the blending process to which we then add the other inert ingredients to give you the finished product. Meaning that our formulation is custom blended for every batch (50 gal. drum) of pepper spray and ensuring your pepper spray lives up to our requirements. In short our product kicks butt and have the tests to prove it!
Then we use highly accurate scales to measure raw product by weight, as this exact method is the ONLY way to ensure product consistency. Once the OC is blended we then test the batch again at the lab to make sure we got the formula right and it meets our minimum SHU guarantee and the batch is assigned a batch number that we record. Once we have confirmed the minimum SHU we will then begin filling cans for sale. We always keep several samples from that batch on hand for a minimum of three years just in case we ever need to review the formula. Also, by keeping samples of the batch on hand we can address any customer inquiries for quality or performance issues at anytime.

Why other pepper spray manufactures don’t have this guarantee?
Because out of 20 most common pepper spray brands tested the independent lab testing showed:
- Over 80% of the brands falsely reported their heat rating or do not fully disclose their product formula.
- Only 3 pepper spray brands report their actual heat rating.
- 17 out of 20 defense spray brands tested DO NOT publish TRUE heat rating.
The Pepper Spray Store’s HEATWAVE brand pepper sprays from Security Plus are the first and only to post the “TRUE” out of the nozzle heat output, have minimum heat-rating guarantee and actually test at or above their stated product specifications.

What you should know about pepper spray labeling
Uncle Sam is NOT watching, but the Pepper Spray Store is! Did you know that there are no federal regulations regarding pepper spray? It’s true.
Currently there is no federal law, industry standard, labeling or packaging requirements for pepper spray. Even worse the defense spray industry knows this and the vast majority of brands (80% according to our independent testing) continue to exploit this by falsely reporting or stating misleading or incomplete product information to consumers. The Pepper-Spray-Store.com is proud to represent our industry with high moral and ethical standards that only a hand full of select companies employ. |
