Safety Tips While Traveling

Using Public Transportation

  • Don't stand alone waiting for public transport. Stand with other passengers while waiting to board public transportation.
  • Stand only in well lighted areas or by an occupied building while waiting for buses or streetcars.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings. If you notice a suspicious person or unusual activity, notify the driver.
  • Sit as near to the front as possible when choosing a seat.
  • Notify driver of bad behavior. If you feel uncomfortable about another passenger or if there is an unpleasant exchange, notify the driver and move to the front of the vehicle.
  • Be aware of others following you. When exiting public transportation, pay attention to others around you. If someone follows you, seek assistance at the nearest occupied building.
  • Exit from public transportation only in well lighted areas and use well traveled brightly lit streets on your journey.

Vehicular & Car Safety

  • Prepare your car for any trip. Provide regular maintenance and have your engine and tires checked by a qualified technician before any long trip. Plan your refueling stops to ensure an adequate fuel supply to reach your destination.
  • Visually check your back seat and floorboards for intruders before getting into your vehicle.
  • Always secure the garage door. After exiting your garage make sure that it is locked and closed.
  • Lock your vehicle doors after entering the vehicle and immediately after exiting.
  • Park in an attended garage when given a choice. If the garage's policy is to leave a key to your vehicle, only leave the ignition key.
  • Keep valuables out of sight. Do not leave wallets, purses, packages or other valuables in plain sight in the vehicle. Secure these items in the trunk or glove box.
  • Park only in well lit areas. Don't give criminals a place to hide.
  • Use the horn to attract attention. If you are approached while in your car, blow the horn to attract attention. Loud noises will often attract people and scare off an attacker who does not desire to be caught and prosecuted.
  • Never stop for hitchhikers. Never allow someone that you do not know well to ride in your car even for short distances. Do not pick up passengers even if they appear harmless. Some thieves work in pairs and may use a distress female accomplice to lure in unsuspecting victims.
  • If you are being followed stay in public sight. If you believe you are being followed, drive to a populated area, police station, fire station or gas station.

Safety Tips While Using An Elevator or Enclosed Area

  • Be aware of others in the elevator car. Look at the other occupants already present inside the elevator before getting in. If you feel uneasy about any persons already inside the elevator, wait for the next car.
  • Stand near the control panel. Women who find themselves alone with one other passenger or a group of male passengers, should stand near to the control panel. If a problem arises, press all of the buttons available including the emergency call button.
  • Trust your instincts and leave the car if you are uncomfortable. If an unsavory character enters the elevator before you reach your floor and you fell uneasy about riding in a closed compartment with them, trust your instincts, exit the car before the door closes and wait for the next car.
  • Be aware of where you are exiting. Always check lobby or corridor before exiting the elevator. If you notice anything suspicious do not get off.
